The Rev. Dr. Percy Alexander Gibson was born on October 19th, 1909 to Solomon and Rhona Gibson in the settlement of Palmetto Point on the island of Eleuthera. He attended the public school at Palmetto Point, and at the age of 15 he was one of three students from the Family Islands selected to attend the recently-established Government High School.

His teaching career began in 1928 at Eastern Senior School, and from 1929 to 1955 his teaching duties took him throughout The Bahamas. During this time, he also received an overseas scholarship in Agriculture to attend Tuskegee Institute in Alabama.

In 1936 he moved to Staniard Creek, Andros and unselfishly imparted his agricultural knowledge to the residents there. In 1944 Dr. Gibson returned to Hatchet Bay and has remained there since.

Dr. Gibson was converted to Christianity on December 16th, 1938. In 1955 he decided to devote his life to the Church, and became an ordained minister of the Gospel. Dr. Gibson's ministry was an exceptional one since its beginning. In 1957 his radio programme Harvest Time, began. The programme for many years reached thousands of lives, and gained renown as the oldest religious radio programme on Z. N. S. He began to minister at Harvest Time Tabernacle in 1965, and continued as pastor of the church located in Hatchet Bay, Eleuthera for many years.

Despite his commitment to his church, Dr. Gibson has not given up teaching. He is an assistant teacher at P. A. Gibson School and at the Governor's Harbour High School.

In 1962 the degree of Doctor of Theology, horis causa, was bestowed on Dr. Gibson by the Christian Workers and Ministerial Association. In 1985 he accepted the "Statue of Victory" a world culture prize from Calvatore, Italy.

 
 
   
       
   
     

Dr. Gibson has received numerous other awards, including the Badge of Honour and Certificate by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in 1965; Honours by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in 1975 and 1985; an Award of Honour by the Primary Principals Association, Nassau in 1979; an Award from the Ministry of Education for dedicated and esteemed service towards educational development in the Bahamas in 1981 and Honours by the Eleuthera Association in 1984.

Dr. Gibson married the former Victoria Johnson, and they have three sons, and two daughters.

This outstanding Theologian, Scholar and Social Activist is certainly a man for all seasons. His life has been an inspiration, and he has enriched the lives of many people both at home and abroad.

This veteran educator has the distinction of having the school in Hatchet Bay named after him.

Dr. Gibson passed away on December 9, 2003 at the age of 94.
