| Uriah
McPhee
was born in Exuma in 1926. He was a merchant and the proprietor
of McPhee's Food Fair on Strachan's Alley off Kemp Road. He was
a deacon and Sunday School Superintendent at St. James Baptist Church.
He was also a high-ranking member of the Masonic Lodge.
Mr.
McPhee ran as P.L.P. candidate in the General Election of January
10, 1967 and won over Mr. John Morley the United Bahamian Party
candidate for the Shirlea Constituency.
He
died on February 20, 1968 after a short illness in a Boston Hospital.
He was 42 years old. His death precipitated the calling of the General
Elections of April 1968 when the Progressive Liberal Party was swept
back into power.
The
Uriah McPhee Primary School on Kemp Road is named in his honour. |
