RECORDS
OF BIRTHS, MARRIAGES AND DEATHS: REGISTRAR GENERAL DEPARTMENT
This office
which dates back to 1764 possesses a rich reservoir of records of
genealogical importance. Its responsibility for births, marriages,
deaths, land grants, deeds, conveyances and slaves resulted in the
generation of innumerable documents. Although the department has
made a large deposit of original and duplicate manuscripts to the
Archives it continues to hold a vast amount of original and microfilmed
records. The government's birth, marriage and death records span
the years 1851 - 1979. Church Records from various denominations
have also been deposited by the Registrar and these cover the period
1802 - 1976. The government records have been microfilmed but not
those from the Churches. The original documents can only be seen
at the discretion of the Research Room Supervisor.
