CONSERVATION AT THE ARCHIVES

The Repair and Bindery Section was established in 1973 at the Ministry of Education on Shirley Street. Later it was moved to the Learning Resources Unit. In September 1988 it was relocated to the main Archives building on Mackey Street.

There was a need for specialised training in preservation and conservation. This resulted in the training of Ms. Elaine Toote at the Jamaica Archives. She trained in the art of hand paper repair. Mrs. Moira Dean (deceased) trained at Camberwell School of Art and Craft in London, England. She trained in the art of document repair and the fine art of book binding and book restoration.

Other training for staff of this section included UNESCO workshops in the Caribbean - Mrs. Storr in Curacaó and Mrs. Dean in Barbados and Antigua. Most recently, Mrs. Storr attended a refresher course in document repair in London, England. This course has updated us on new methods and materials now being used.

The purpose of the Repair and Bindery Section is two-fold. The preservation and conservation of document repair using a traditional method of document repair on lamination or encapsulation, and the rebinding of documents into books.
