CONTRACT LABOUR RECORDS

During the Second World War, an agreement was made between the Bahamas and the United States Governments to recruit Bahamian Labourers for agricultural employment in Florida and the adjourning States. Between 1943 - 1945 a large number of Bahamians travelled to the United States in the capacity of Contract Workers. As a result files were created on many of the workers. In the 1970s, the Ministry of Labour deposited these records into the Archives.

The files contain a wealth of information. They indicate names, address, date and place of birth, nationality, settlement and physical description. In addition parents name, status, spouse and children's names are also mentioned. The Contract Workers' files are listed in alphabetical order and span the 1940s through 1966.

For these records the fifty year rule applies. Therefore public accessibility is prohibited at this time.
