JURY LISTS

In the Bahamas, during the nineteenth century, only men who met the established criteria could serve as jurors on the Petit and Grand Juries. Until 1833 only whites were allowed to serve as jurors. In this year however, coloureds and blacks who were adequately qualified were allowed to serve.

The jury lists which originated from the Supreme Court date from 1790 - 1938. The earlier schedules only indicate the names of the qualified men. The later lists however show the names, trade, type of residence and property qualification of perspective jurors. The earlier records are in manuscript form while the later ones are typed.
