MAPS
AND PLANS
Control of land in The Bahamas came under the jurisdiction of the
Surveyor General's Office and the Registrar of Records. The documents
generated by these agencies include maps, plans, conveyances, deeds
and indentures. The former documents (i.e. maps and plans) indicate
ownership of land, size of the property, reference books and page
numbers where the grant can be found. Successive owners of the land
can also be gleaned from these cartographic documents. The records
which are comprised of original, Photostats and traced maps and plans
were deposited in the Archives by the Department of Lands and Surveys,
the Local Government Department and private individuals. In addition
some were purchased from the Public Records Office in London. The
Map Collection which covers the period 1788 - 1969 includes all the
islands except Bimini, Grand Bahama and Mayaguana. |
