REFERENCE SERVICES:

When researchers enter the Research Room, the staff conducts an informal interview to determine the nature and depth of the research to be undertaken, suggests relevant sources, gives instructions in the use of archival research tools, and provides information on the services and facilities of the Department of Archives. Researchers are also familiarized with the RULES AND REGULATIONS which govern the use of the research facilities. Anyone who refuses to obey these regulations can be evicted.

Researchers are also required to sign the ATTENDANCE REGISTER stating their name, address and specific topic of research. First time researchers are required to complete an APPLICATION FORM.

The records, which are kept in secured repositories, are brought to them for their perusal. There is no self-service facility - i.e. researchers are not allowed to get the records for themselves.

On completion of their research (each day), researchers complete a DOCUMENT CALL SLIP listing the records used. These forms serve as a record for researchers if they do not remember what they used on a previous visit. They also assist the research staff in determining what type and the amount of records that are being used.
