Welcome
to The Bahamas National Archives. We have tried to give you an idea
of our development and also which records and services are available
at the Department of Archives.
The Bahamas Archives in facing the challenges of the 21st century,
is continuing to automate its holdings. The website, which will soon
contain historical information will be constantly updated. Our aim
is to preserve the records of administrative and historical interest
and to make them accessible to the public. These records which belong
to the people of The Bahamas represent our common heritage and have
insight into the moulding of the Bahamian character.
Included in
our records which have been deposited by various branches of government
are documents relating to slavery, notably the Farquharson's Diary,
Slave Registers, a Manumission Register and Compensation Returns.
At The Bahamas
Archives we believe as the late Arthur Doughty, Dominion Archivist
of Canada stated: "Of all national assets, Archives are the
most precious. They are the gift of one generation to another and
the extent of our care of them marks the extent of our civilization."
It is my hope
that you will take the time to explore the resources available on
this web site.
